Fife Public Health Dataset

The Fife Public Health Dataset Project is designed to enable us to develop effective ways to provide public health information, and therefore to help promote healthy public policy in Fife.  The aim of the dataset is to build and promote the use of a broad range of social, economic and health indicators for use by the public and professionals alike.  The current objectives are:

  • To maintain and develop the public health dataset - by expanding the range of indicators, developing alternative geographies and forms of presentation to enhance accessibility and improve functionality.
  • To broaden the user base by raising awareness of the public health dataset amongst community planning partners, community and voluntary organisations, the general public and linking with Scottish Neighbourhood Statistics.
  • To provide intelligence to community planning partners by contributing to analysis of the public health dataset, and using the public health dataset indicators for overarching monitoring indicators eg. children and young people's strategy, health and wellbeing alliance, community budgeting, regeneration area monitoring and potentially an older people's strategy.

The Public Health Dataset contains many indicators covering population; social environment; physical and biological environment; lifestyle and behaviour; education, skills and training; services; income; economic indicators and prosperity; and disease, wellbeing, health and function.  For each indicator information is presented as a number and percentage or rate for the population as applicable.  Up to 5 years worth of information is currently available for each indicator.  Information is presented for a range of Fife's geographical areas such as Community Health Partnership, Local Management Unit, datazone and intermediate geography; wherever possible comparisons for Fife and Scotland are also given.  Information held in the dataset is being amalgamated with information from Fife's Social Justice Analysis System to form KnowFife (see below).

Half day training courses are available for those who want to spend dedicated time learning how to use the dataset.

Know Fife

This is a community planning initiative which aims to bring together information on needs and outcomes as well as information on activity, resources and finance for a range of geographic communities across Fife.  Information comes from an amalgamation of Fife Public Health Dataset (see above) and Fife's Social Justice Analysis System (previously available on cd).  Outputs from the system include geographic and thematic profiles for a wide range of geographies across Fife, graphs, tables and maps.

The Fife Regeneration, Health and Wellbeing Study

This study is all about finding out more about the health and wellbeing of the people of Fife. The study is especially interested in finding out how all the work on regenerating Fife is doing when it comes to improving the health and wellbeing of people. The study which is reported on here - using qualitative approaches - is part of a larger study - using quantitative approaches - which will also have an on line element in 2007.

Fife Community Health Profiles

Members of staff from the departments' of Public Health and Information Services within Fife NHS Board have been working jointly with colleagues within Community Health Partnerships (CHPs) and Fife Council to produce community health profiles for local areas within Fife.

The aim of producing the profiles is to provide information about health, well-being and the determinants of health at a local level in one accessible document.  Each health profile takes the form of a concise A4 booklet.  There are currently three sets of profiles available; the general population and the Joint Health Improvement Plan themes of working lives and children and early years.  All of the profiles are available for each of the three CHP and six Local Management Unit (LMU) areas.

Each set of profiles contains demographic information and information on mortality, key health topics, life circumstances and the use of health, social and education services for an area with comparisons to Fife. The information was derived from a range of sources including both routine data and surveys. Explanatory notes and full referencing have been included as a guide to the information presented.  The following profiles are in PDF format. To view the documents you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader. This can be downloaded free of charge by clicking on the logo under the resource panel.  Click here to go to the Community Health & Wellbeing Information Profiles (will open in a new window)
